Kimihiro Watanuki is a high school student troubled by his strange affinity for spirits.
One day, he stumbles into a place called the "shop," as if drawn there by some mystical force. Thus begins his fateful meeting with the proprietress, Yuko Ichihara.
She promises to grant any wish, as long as the appropriate price is paid.
In exchange for fixing his spirit troubles, Watanuki agrees to work as a live-in employee, where he and the shop's customers become entangled in various peculiar phenomena.
